why are you still against chuck hagel moving forward and being confirmed? >> well, thank you, thomas, for having me. i think he's the wrong person to lead the department of defense. it's the largest employer in our country, a significant management skills are needed. i also believe that he has been wrong. he has a long history that is to me unsettling in terms of positions on iran, iraq, israel, and nuclear weapons. and i think thomas, anybody that watched the confirmation hearings know that he appeared very wobbly. i don't think we have that with chuck hagel. >> is this more about getting a former republican in charge of defense means this is all about sequestration and the fact that major budgetary cuts are coming to our defense and would provide a great way to get those cuts done because a republican will be overseeing them? >> there are some that have suggested that. if you have somebody, a secretary of defense whose roll it is to advise the president in term of national security. i think he's the wrong person to be there. now, leon panetta who is going

earlier today there was a cloture vote on chuck hagel. this is essentially what we knew last week is that republicans were going to hold up the eventual askengs of chuck hagel to become defense secretary in case there was anything in his past that could damn him. seven days later apparently there's nothing in his past so they're comfortable moving forward. he's expected to be confirmed probably within the next five minutes. you can even have it in this block if we're so fortunate. >> does that not prove that the whole nonsense around the nomination process on this man was simply invented? it was theatrics. there was no substance. it's the same as the friends of hamas. shall are they? >> reporter: i think it does show that the republican strategy was to try to bloody him as much as possible with the belief if they were able to do it enough he would perhaps withdraw. he was pretty vehement last week he would not withdraw. now with the sequester looking like it's going to go forward, my calculations there's $46 billion in military cuts over

can chuck hagel mend fences in the republican party? >> is he technically a republican, but i think we should leave the guy alone, respect the president's decision, and see what committee do. >> leave the dude alone. >> amen. >> amen to that. i don't know. he has a lot on his plate. john brennan is now the strawman for the republican party. they may hold up his nomination. in the end, michael eric dyson, is this obstruction benefitting the republican party? >> not at all. the reality is that they hate who they hate because they hate the guy in charge, so they end up hating the people who are themselves. we've seen the enemy, and it's us, except they don't recognize that they're doing the country a great disservice, and by targeting, you know, hagel and brennan, and you might have legitimate opposition to them, but do it in a way that is above board, not across the board kind of filibustering and the people who are in the cabinet serve at the president's leisure and his pleasure, and we've now set a horrible precedent. >> we have to leav

the one we may face within months. >> i know chuck hagel and know him well. i know he's going to sit down and he's going to do exactly what peter said. he's going to come out with a plan. he's going to communicate with the soldiers in the field. he's going to remind them he was a sergeant, too, and he is going to implement the president's policy of shifting out of the wars we're engaged in now and sorting out other priorities. i think my estimate of this is that he's going to dom out with a very, very good and confident looking strategy for the military and its priorities and how to responsibly handle what likely are to be sizable cuts. so he's going to owe it, but people in the gop are saying that he's going to have to reinvent their relationship with them. i think it's the other way around. i grew up in oklahoma. my parents are in texas. these places have bases, defense contractors. now, hagel will be judicious. he's not going to hold anything against them, but their constituents are going to want -- can you talk to chuck hagel about our base? i don't know
